Topics We Will Cover:
Loop Busters rebuilds Spanning Tree Protocol from the ground up in plain language, then pushes further by exploring how a second, often-mishandled feature — EtherChannel — can silently introduce the very loop risks STP is designed to prevent. Across six modules and an integrated lab, the course translates STP's dense vocabulary (BPDUs, Bridge IDs, path cost, port roles) into everyday analogies before walking through the protocol's strict three-step election process: Root Bridge selection, Root Port selection, and Designated Port selection. From there, it covers the legacy port-state progression (Blocking, Listening, Learning, Forwarding) that explains the notorious ~50-second convergence time, followed by the best-practice commands — root primary/secondary, PortFast, UplinkFast, BackboneFast, and Root Guard — used to take STP off "default autopilot" and make it deterministic and secure. The course then shifts to troubleshooting, covering three real-world failure patterns: broadcast storms, Root Bridge hijacking, and EtherChannel misconfiguration, along with the verification commands and diagnostic workflow needed to resolve each. Module 6 sets up the course's signature lab: comparing static "on" EtherChannel bundling (which fails silently) against LACP negotiation (which catches mismatches immediately). The Integrated Lab ties everything together — students build a deterministic three-switch STP hierarchy, deliberately miswire a Layer 3 EtherChannel, observe the silent failure firsthand, then fix it with LACP and document why the two failure modes behaved so differently. Estimated time is 4–6 hours for the modules plus 2–3 hours for the lab, using Packet Tracer, GNS3, or physical Cisco IOS switches.
